扬唐仁波切

In these dusky brooding mountains, covered in legendary glow and misty haloed history, there is a velvety calm covering everything, a silent layer of tranquil open space. A great drumfire burst breaks the gentle silence as wood and stone blister and crack in the raging heat of the flames billowing into the air. Flaming lions and twisted golden jewels blacken and char - the stormy blue green fog rolls softly over the hilltops, the contrast a uniquely resplendent combination. This is a simple land of farms and gentle souls - this is the glorious green land of Sikkim. As thousands have gathered to pay their last respects and watch the cremation of their beloved master, rain begs to come but never breaks through the stormy clouds overhead, bringing darkened rainbow-like colors in the skies above. Despite the outrageous numbers and possible mournful, somber conditions all is extremely quiet and calm, not a murmur or a shout breaks through the throng of silent, peaceful onlookers. This seems quite fitting from what I have learned and heard about the impressive life of the man whose passing is being celebrated before me: the most Venerable Yangthang Rinpoche. A man of great compassion, forgiveness and keeping life simple whilst letting go of all which was not truly important. A great teacher, and a man of great, great humility. A man imprisoned for over twenty years, yet holding no ill regard for his captors, even guiding some of them as students later on. A man whose life's work can be seen clearly in the actions of his students - to carry out his last rites and cremation in such regality yet pompous-less style was extremely powerful.

While tears were nonetheless shed, gone was the traumatic and sorrowful, bringing only great rejoicing in his life’s work, the lives he touched and the lineage that will miss him so. The great flames enveloping the brilliant white stupa a fitting and splendid tribute to a great master’s passing. The people of Sikkim - how important this man, this teacher, this master was to you is impossible for me to comprehend. What he meant to this land of boundless green and heaven embracing mountains is not for me to know, but only to imagine and enjoy from the stories that have been shared with me. The lives being touched just so by this Rinpoche, the impact upon them, though I never had the opportunity to meet him in this life, I feel extremely fortunate to have been there for this grand and final etude in his honor. To the great Yangthang, your life set free by the ever burning flames, smoke and offering abound. Chanting loudly, calling to the heavens your clan sending you off to distant lands in glorious fiery splendor. Speaking from my heart and only from what I can offer with honesty, what I have seen here today - I am beyond words. Farewell to the great and most venerable Yangthang - may the great fire of cremation bring forth your swift and harmonious rebirth. Emaho!
