Zen meditaton in the church

2015 Lent at the Community Church of Syosset,

Cultivating Compassion: Opportunities for Spiritual Growth

36, Church St., Syosset, NY (LIE Exit 43 North)

Tel: 1-516-921-2240

Dear Friends,

I am writing you because at some point in the past year or so, you have expressed interest in the practice of Zen at the Community Church of Syosset.

During this period of Lent, when Christians are focused on the inner meaning of our spiritual lives, we offer additional opportunities to look inward through Zen meditation.

Beginning February 24, and each Tuesday through March, we will add an additional time for Zen meditation from 5:30-7 p.m. This will consist of ½ hour of meditation, Kinhin (walking meditation), a Dharma talk given by myself on a Zen koan, and a concluding period of meditation, closing with the Four Vows.

This coming Saturday, February 28, we will have a full day of Zen meditation, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., divided between Zazen (sitting meditation), walking meditation (kinhin), a Dharma talk and lunch. Before lunch we will chant the Meal Gatha, copies of which will be made available, and after more meditation, we will end as usual with the Four Vows.

Those interested in the common ground and resonances between Christianity and Zen Buddhism are especially invited to attend the Forum on Sun. March 8, 11:30-1, following our morning worship. The Forum is titled, One World, One Body, and will examine similarities and differences between the two faiths, and what one may gain by practicing in two traditions. Such resonances may be found in other religions as well: Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, for example. Open discussion and sharing will make this an enriching experience for us all.

Anyone with an interest in Zen, with it’s concern with matters of life and death, may also find enrichment by participating in our book study on A Year to Live: how to live this year as if it were your last, by Stephen Levine.  We will meet the first three Wednesday evenings (6-7:30pm)in March and conclude with a one day retreat on April 4, 10a.m.-4 p.m.

Finally, we offer a very special program at this time: Photography As Spiritual Practice, led by Paul Kimmerling, on Friday evening, March 13; Saturday from 10-4, and Sunday, 11:30-1. Participants will be invited to bring their cameras (including smart phones), and engage the program not as professional photographers but people seriously interested in seeing the world in a new way, through our spiritual lenses, so that we may learn better how to love ourselves and love our world.

Please feel free to join us for as much of these offerings as interest you. If you have any questions, please call me at our church office (516-921-2240).

Sincerely,

Pastor Bob (dharma name, KaKu歌空, Song of Emptiness)
